New Employee Orientation
This two-day program covers The BROADMOOR’s mission and philosophy, the basics of guest service and what it means to be Five-Star, Five-Diamond, as well as basic policies. New Hire Orientation is designed to prepare you for a successful career at The BROADMOOR.
Guest Relations
This eight-hour "Keeping the Stars" workshop focuses on the Five-Star, Five- Diamond rating requirements. Learn the importance of internal and external guest satisfaction, as well as good communication through exercises, role-playing, group activities and games.
Area Attractions
This course provides an overview of the area attractions in Colorado Springs; perfect for employees new to the area. It includes a driving tour of many of the area’s most popular attractions.
Technical Skill Development
Training Opportunities Range from Basic Job Skills to Advanced Classes, Including the Following:

Train the Trainer
This interactive class consists of two three-hour sessions. Participants learn techniques for training, as well as how to deal with different learning styles and backgrounds.
Hotel Management Seminar Series
This series of seven seminars is designed to give participants a broad overview of all aspects of hotel management at The BROADMOOR. Seminars are facilitated by Executive Committee members and Department Heads who introduce career paths within their divisions and teach employees what it takes to move up in the hotel industry.

Sponsored by the Educational Institute of the American Hotel & Lodging Association, classes can count as three credits at Pikes Peak Community College. Upon completion, employees qualify for a Hotel Operations Certificate.

- Introduction to Hospitality Today: Overview of the hospitality industry.
- Hospitality Sales and Marketing: Covers basic sales and marketing techniques, along with creative and successful sales and marketing program ideas.
- Managing Front Office Operations: Presents the basic activities and functions of a hotel property front office.
- Food Production Principles: Teaches basic quality food production and encourages students to be innovative in food preparations.
- Food and Beverage Management: Shows how to profitably manage a food service operation.
- Hospitality Supervision: Explains the principles of supervision as they apply to the hospitality industry.
- Hospitality Law: Provides an overview of federal government legislation and regulations that have a nationwide impact on the hospitality industry.
- Managerial Accounting: Teaches how to make effective managerial business and operational decisions based on a thorough understanding of financial analysis.
- English as a Second Language: This eight-week course is open to all employees regardless of current English speaking skills. Our ESL program covers everything from vocabulary and pronunciation to grammar, idioms and sentence structure. ESL is offered to all employees at no charge.

We are committed to developing our leaders so they can offer employees of The BROADMOOR the support, knowledge and encouragement they need to deliver service that goes above and beyond our guests' expectations.
Leadership training at The BROADMOOR is not just a class or a set of classes, but an approach that shapes our organizational culture. We provide a comprehensive training program that offers a basic understanding of supervision skills, consistency in management practices throughout the hotel, and personal and professional development.
During their first year every new manager and supervisor completes a series of between 15 and 20 courses that are selected based on the leadership role for which they have been selected.
Management Course Curriculum Workshops Include:
- Coaching for Performance Improvement: Great leaders are great coaches! In this course managers and supervisors learn how to coach and counsel their staff to maximum performance. In addition to the basics of motivating and communicating, this class covers progressive discipline and performance improvement strategies.
- Conducting Effective Performance Appraisals: Managers and supervisors learn the importance of completing and conducting formal employee performance reviews, along with communication techniques for dealing with performance issues and how to conduct fair and objective appraisals.
- Conflict Resolution: In this class participants gain the basic tools needed to successfully deal with conflict in the workplace. Managers will also learn to identify types of conflict, ways to benefit from conflict and how to effectively manage conflict at all levels.
- Getting Results: A Guide to Running Effective Meetings: Spend too much time in meetings? This class will offer the basics of meeting planning and give participants a strong understanding of maximizing time spent in meetings and minimizing the cost of meetings.
- Managing Your Time and Achieving Your Objectives: Take control of your day! This workshop provides the tools necessary to manage your time more effectively, including techniques for using calendars, daily planners and to-do lists for handling multiple tasks.
- Preventing Harassment: This important course helps supervisors and managers become more aware of potentially hostile behaviors in the workplace. Learn how to identify behaviors, proactive measures to eliminate harassment situations, and proper reporting and investigation of allegations of harassment.
- Preventing Workplace Violence: This practical workshop is designed to increase knowledge and awareness of the potential of workplace violence. Participants learn how to identify potentially violent people or situations and important skills for responding in a dangerous situation.
- Selecting Exceptional People: This class emphasizes top practices for interviewing and hiring quality employees, important questions to ask in interviews, as well as detailed legal information on hiring practices.
- S.M.A.R.T. Start (Supervisors and Managers Acting Responsibly Together): A full day orientation that new managers and supervisors complete after The BROADMOOR Orientation. In this program, new managers and supervisors get a basic introduction to The BROADMOOR’s human resources and accounting procedures. This class also covers leadership philosophies and expectations of all individuals in management and supervisory positions.
- Staffing and Scheduling: Learn how to minimize overtime and maximize productivity, as well as scheduling, developing a staffing guide, running overtime reports, and creative methods for staffing a department.
- Understanding Employment Law : This interactive seminar provides participants with a basic foundation for understanding the legal aspects of supervising others. Key employment laws discussed include employment discrimination, protecting employee privacy, reducing workplace violence, workplace safety, unlawful harassment, and labor relations.
