Designing The Broadmoor Gardens

One of the iconic names in landscape design and architecture is Olmsted. Fredrick Law Olmsted, Jr. and his brother John Charles Olmsted both mastered their skills under the discerning eye of their world-famous father, Fredrick Law Olmsted, Sr. the architect of such iconic grounds as Central Park in New York, as well as the U.S. Capitol and the White House. Along the way, the Olmsted brothers also designed the grounds of The Broadmoor, the Penrose House at El Pomar, and a series of streets adjacent to the neighborhood. This month, we celebrate what the Olmsted’s created through tours and classes designed to take gardening to a new level.

Fun Fact

In 1918 the hotel opened with a rooftop garden. It allowed entrance to the belfry, the equivalent of 11 stories high! This was surmounted by a lighted weather vane and “lantern of unique design” in wrought iron. A lantern was often used as a symbol of the innkeeper’s hospitality. From the tower, the visitor could view the entire hotel property and the city of Colorado Spring to the east and north. Today the rooftop garden is gone, but the original weather vane and lantern remain on the top of the Hotel. As for our gardens, they outgrew the rooftop long ago. Our chefs and culinary team established Broadmoor Farms, an on-site greenhouse and garden maintained through eco-friendly growing practices. Tours are available this month for a closer look at how our produce makes the journey from our farm to your table.
