10 Facts You Didn't Know About The Broadmoor's White Lights Ceremony

Intro 2

The Broadmoor Hotel’s White Lights Ceremony has been an iconic holiday celebration in Colorado Springs for thirty years. Whether the ceremony has been a part of your holiday routine for three decades, or you will be trying it out for the first time this year, here are some facts about the event you will love:
  1. Santa loves The Broadmoor!
Ever since the opening of the hotel, we have been one of Santa’s favorite destinations. Take a look at some of our favorite holiday memories:

Holiday Historical 2

  1. We’ve been doing this for thirty years.
The first White Lights Ceremony took place in 1985. In 1986, one of the main attractions was the lighting of an “employee tree.” Broadmoor employees stood in a giant poinsettia tree, and sang carols to entertain the guests. We certainly have come a long way!

  1. The ceremony requires the use of 1 million holiday lights.
Ever since early October, our maintenance team has been painstakingly hanging hundreds of thousands of strands of white lights throughout the property. That’s over 1 million lights! Now, imagine watching all of those lights switch on at the same time (here’s a hint: you can!).

  1. We make our own hot chocolate.
During the ceremony, we will be serving up warm hot chocolate to help keep out the cold. Don’t forget to grab a couple of cans: Salted Caramel, Peppermint and Holiday Spice at Espresso’s. While you’re at it, indulge in some of the cafe's pumpkin pie and Christmas bonbons.

  1. All of our restaurants will be open on the night of the ceremony!
This is the perfect opportunity to have a family night out. We suggest that you make your reservations as soon as possible, as this is one of the most busy weekends of the year and there's only a few pre-White Lights reservations left.
  1. Our holiday breads have international roots.
During the Weekend of the White Lights Ceremony, Espresso’s will be selling its international holiday breads. Try Italian Panettone, French Pain d’ Epic, or German Stollen.

Holiday Breads 2   Santa 2

  1. Every year, Santa’s arrival is a surprise.
At every White Lights Ceremony, Santa arrives in style. In previous years we have seen Mr. Clause arrive on a motorcycle, in a 1960s Cadillac, and of course by landing on the roof of the hotel with his reindeer. One year, he even drove a stage coach across the bridge of Cheyenne Lake. We can’t wait to see what he has in store for us this year!
  1. Santa loves breakfast.
If you happen to be staying at The Broadmoor over Thanksgiving weekend, why not have breakfast with Santa before his big arrival? Make your reservation for Breakfast with Santa the morning of the 28th before we run out of spots.
  1. All proceeds go to help the American Cancer Society and El Pomar’s Empty Stocking Fund.
As a hotel, we believe in the importance in being active in the community. This is why all funds raised during the event will be donated to the American Cancer Society and the Empty Stocking Fund of Colorado Springs. All the more reason to come to the event!

Gingerbread 2

  1. 10. Our gingerbread mansion requires…
  •  226 man hours
  • 120 lbs of butter
  • 73 lbs of whole eggs
  • 95 lbs of egg whites
  • 100 lbs of honey
  • 300 lbs of flour
  • 10 lbs of holiday spices
  • 400 lbs of powdered sugar
  • 150 cheers for joy
  • 200 lbs of candy
…but it sure looks amazing! The mansion will be ready to view the night of the ceremony. Make sure you stop by before Santa’s arrival!
