The Early Years: Destined for Greatness

Larger than life men and women helped shape Colorado Springs in the latter part of the 19th century. It was those visions that inspired a Union General, a Prussian Count and a well-bred Philadelphian with a wanderlust to see the potential in this land that sits at the gateway to the American West. In January, we invite you to learn about what brought them here, what they envisioned, dreamed and developed. We will share truths, myths and urban legends throughout the month. Welcome to the beginning of The Broadmoor’s Centennial, and the first of 12 exciting and engaging months of celebration.

Legacy of Ice

On January 20, 2018, we celebrated “A Legacy of Ice,” and those who came to coach and train, as well as those who left indelible tracings on our memories. The evening also saluted Broadmoor Skating Club member and Colorado College alumnus, PEGGY FLEMING JENKINS, as we celebrated the 50th anniversary of her Olympic Gold Medal win in Grenoble, France, the only gold that Team USA would win that year in any sport.

Featured Cocktail - The Broadmoor

“Bee” inspired with this specially crafted concoction to kick off The Broadmoor Centennial celebration! An original recipe created by Broadmoor Lead Bartender, Dennis Schuler, we hope The Broadmoor Cocktail can take its place beside all the other grand cocktails still served from 100 years ago.

Fun Fact

The Broadmoor World Arena was a pioneering skating rink and hockey arena. Originally built as an enclosed riding academy in 1930, the building was later converted to an ice arena. After seeing famed skater Sonja Henie, Spencer Penrose converted the riding academy into the Broadmoor Ice Palace in a mere 24 days at the cost of $200,000.
