July 1, 1918, The Broadmoor hosted the first golf tournament on the original Donald Ross-designed course. Over the past century, some of the greatest names of the game have played here – and won – including Jack Nicklaus’ historic first win in the 1959 U.S. Amateur, and Annika Sorenstam’s breathtaking 1-stroke victory over Meg Mallon in the 1995 U.S. Women’s Open.

This year, The Broadmoor celebrates 23 golf championships and eight majors. It honors some of the greatest golf pros of the time who not only played but also taught on the challenging greens at the base of Cheyenne Mountain. Learn who played here, and who stayed here, by exploring new golf history displays. Then take on our storied links and write your own page of Broadmoor history.

Fun Fact

The formal dedication of the new golf course was made a gala occasion and the fine sum of $12,250 was raised for the local chapter of the Red Cross. In bidding for the match, Spencer Penrose guaranteed $10,000 to the Red Cross, and went well over the mark. The caddy privileges netted $1,200 and a golf ball autographed by President Woodrow Wilson sold for $500.
