A Destination Realized: The Grande Dame Opens

This month, we celebrate our centennial by bringing back some of the things guests would have experienced, including some of the Penrose’s culinary favorites. There will be a special benefit concert for Challenge America hosted by Vince Gill and Amy Grant, and the U.S. Senior Open will pay tribute to The Broadmoor’s 100th birthday with a June 29 fireworks show.

Centennial Gala Weekend Celebration
June 1-3, 2018

On June 1, 1918, exactly four weeks before the official unveiling on June 29, Spencer and Julie Penrose opened the doors to 200 of their closest friends so they could experience first-hand what a hundred years later is now legend. The party included presidents, politicians, and notables from around the country. They traveled by train and carriage to wonder at the a grand vision realized where European elegance was designed to meet Western hospitality. Now, join us on the same date a century later and relive the excitement that the first guests experienced when they walked through the doors and welcomed a new age in hospitality.

Featured Cocktail - Negroni

Italy has historically shown an affinity for American cocktails, and this may be the most famous example. This drink is an Italian variation on a drink called the Americano. Count Camillo Negroni replaced the soda water with gin in his Americano, and the Negroni was created.

Fun Fact

At the private opening of the Hotel, 400 guests danced from 7:30 pm until midnight to the sounds of the Boxhorn Orchestra. John D. Rockefeller was to be the first celebrity guest, but paint fumes forced him to move to the Antlers Hotel to sleep for the night!
