The Broadmoor: Gateway to the American West

In 1917, Arthur Chapman published a book of verse. One poem in particular became a favorite of The Broadmoor’s founder, Spencer Penrose. You can find it on a plaque outside the front doors of Broadmoor Main. “Out where the handclasp's a little stronger; out where the smile dwells a little longer; that’s where the West begins.” To celebrate Mr. Penrose’s vision of creating more than just a resort, but designing a true destination, this month learn about the unusual history of Cloud Camp, built atop Cheyenne Mountain, and The Ranch at Emerald Valley, once called Camp Vigil and the site of many rustically elegant parties in its heyday.

Ultimate Colorado Adventure
7-Day Wilderness Getaway

It started in 1923 with a place in the mountains, nestled in a valley under the shadow of Mount Vigil. Three years later, it soared to the heights of Cheyenne Mountain overlooking Pikes Peak. More recently, it included the discovery of an enclave on the river’s edge where the only sounds that speak to you are the ones of rushing waters, rustling leaves and the whir of line well-cast to entice a trout. Now, The Ranch at Emerald Valley, Cloud Camp, and Fly Fishing Camp have redefined adventure in a surprising way that combines the best of what you expect from a Colorado mountain getaway. Each is unique, but each offers a Broadmoor experience unlike anything you could imagine. Seven days will hardly seem long enough, but the memories will last a lifetime.

Featured Cocktail - Tom Collins

Has Tom Collins been insulting you? As the tall tale goes, new patrons in social clubs and watering holes would soon be informed that “Tom Collins” (who didn’t really exist) was spreading unflattering rumors about this new patron and it was his duty to go settle the score. The resulting hunt was followed by the town gentlemen, in on the joke of course, who would sip the drink bearing the name of the imaginary villain.

Fun Fact

By 1961 the western steak fry at “Rotten Log Hollow” was a popular event. Chuck wagon dinners were served summer Tuesday evenings at the hotel’s picnic pavilion located in Fisher Canon at the foot of Cheyenne Mountain. The steak fry featured cowboy entertainment and singing around the campfire, but as far back as 1940, there were special “barbecue deluxe” evenings planned for conventions and guests. One special event was held for the 1949 National Governors Conference. In true Spencer Penrose fashion, we still offer a true western experience not to be missed: twice-weekly cookouts for guests at The Ranch at Emerald Valley. In fact, all three of our Broadmoor Wilderness Experiences, The Ranch, Cloud Camp, and Fly Fishing Camp, combine the love of travel with the majesty of the American West right here at the foot of the Rocky Mountains.
