We are pleased to announce that The Broadmoor will reopen its doors to our overnight and local guests on Sunday, June 28, 2020. Select restaurants, activities and offerings will reopen accordingly, in phases, as business levels and State and Federal requirements allow.

Tennis Staff

The Broadmoor's professional tennis staff offers top-rate instruction for all ages and skill levels. Our fundamental teaching philosophy is shared by the entire teaching staff, providing consistency and excellence in all tennis programs at our Colorado Springs resort.

Karen Schott, Director of Tennis

Karen joined The Broadmoor Tennis Staff as a teaching professional in 1994 and became Director of Tennis in November, 2005 after assisting Dennis Ralston as Director for eleven years. Karen was a top junior player in Colorado and the Intermountain Section and served as captain of the University of Denver tennis team where she competed on the varsity team for four years. Karen served for ten years on the USTA Colorado District Board of Directors (VP) and is active in several other USTA Colorado committees. Karen is a certified USPTA Tennis Professional and is also certified as a Pickleball Coach by the Professional Pickleball Registry.

Christopher Ellis, Head Tennis Professional
Christopher began his Broadmoor career in 2001. He hails from Huntsville, Alabama where he coached high school tennis and served as a tennis professional at the Vestavia Country Club. Christopher was the #1 High School Singles Champion for Alabama in 1984 before playing at Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Alabama. He was named Head Tennis Professional in June 2012. Christopher served as Head Coach for the Cheyenne Mountain High School girl’s tennis team in 2006 and was named tennis “Coach of the Year” in Colorado Springs. Christopher is a certified USPTA Tennis Professional and is also certified as a Pickleball Coach by the Professional Pickleball Registry.

Tom Rowell, Tennis Professional
Tom hails from Melbourne, Australia where he taught tennis and assisted with the Australian Open at Melbourne Park. After moving stateside, Tom served as the Head Pro at Cliff Drysdale’s Vacaville in California. His wife, Sarah, was coached here at The Broadmoor during her junior competitive tennis years before moving to Australia where she met Tom as a fellow tennis coach at Melbourne Park. They now both call Colorado home and are the proud parents of Jemma and Charlie. Tom is certified USPTR Tennis Professional.

Josh Swindler, Tennis Professional

Josh is the newest addition to The Broadmoor Tennis staff. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Ashville in 2017, Josh captained their Division One Men’s Tennis Team, playing #2 Singles and #1 Doubles. Josh finished his final college season with a 20-1 record at #1 Doubles and was named to the Big South First-Team All Conference in singles and doubles. Josh coached at the LTP Tennis Club in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina working with nationally ranked junior players and aspiring Division 1 athletes. Most recently, Josh was the Assistant Pro at the Biltmore Forest Country Club in Asheville, North Carolina, teaching both adults and juniors.

Robert Balboa, Tennis Professional

Robert has forty one years of experience teaching tennis in St. Louis and Colorado Springs. His credentials include coaching the #1 ranked 16 & 18 girl in the US as well as six USTA teams that made it to Nationals. As a player, Robert won National titles in both men’s 5.0 and men’s 55 & over. He loves to compete in National events around the country. Robert is a USPTR certified tennis professional and is also a certified Pickleball Coach. Robert and his wife, Monique (also an experienced tennis player), reside in Colorado Springs.

David Schott, Tennis Professional

Originally from Santa Monica, California, David has lived in Colorado for the past twenty-six years. David competed at the University of Colorado in both tennis and skiing. After graduating, he parlayed his tennis experience and architectural degree from CU into a position with IMG designing tennis facilities around the world. David has coached tennis in the Evergreen and Denver area for the past twenty years. In addition to his tennis experience, David is a certified USPTA Tennis Professional and a certified Pickleball Coach by the Professional Pickleball Registry.

Rick Thompson, Tennis Professional

Rick Thompson began coaching at a tennis camp in Germany at the age of 16. He played college tennis at Texas A&M before moving to California to teach at the Jack Kramer Club. He coached a number of tour-bound juniors including Pete and Stella Sampras and Kimberly Po. Rick spent most of his career teaching in Ojai California. In 2017, Rick, his wife Joy, daughters Jules and Hina moved to Colorado Springs. Rick is a certified USPTR tennis professional
